The Acadia Community Association
About
The Acadia Community Association is a volunteer Board of Directors that govern the community of Acadia. The ARC is owned and operated by the ACA, which uses the facility as their home base. The ACA has been in operation since 1961, and came together in 1981 to build the ARC as the Acadia community center.
Events
The ACA holds multiple events throughout the year, at both the ARC and around Acadia. These events are planned, coordinated, and ran by the Board of Directors for the community, but all are welcome and encouraged to attend!
Volunteering
As a volunteer based organization, the ACA is reliant on volunteers to accomplish all that they do. Whether that is from the Board that runs the association, or the people that come down and help with events. If you are interested in volunteering, click the link below to see the available positions!
Aca Casino Fundraiser Volunteer Call Out
The Casino Fundraiser is the ACA’s biggest fundraiser of the year! The proceeds from this fundraiser provide the ability for the ACA to continue offering fun events, great programming, and carry out projects and initiatives for the community of Acadia!
If you’ve never worked a casino before, have no fear! You will be well-trained, fed, and assisted in having some fun while checking out something that you may not normally get to see! We hope you’ll consider joining us!
Volunteers will receive a meal, as well as snacks and refreshments during their shift(s).
*Volunteers must be of legal age and will be required to show identification.
Click the button below to directly sign up for a shift, or email volunteer@acadiaca.com for more information.
Summer at the ARC
There is always something to do here at the ARC! After our curling and hockey ice come out, we jump right into our trade show season. We have a bunch of annual events that make the ARC their home base, like the CCS 8-Ball Pool Tournament, Flat Track Fever Roller Derby, and the Ukrainian Festival. In addition to events, there is a ton of annual markets that come through the ARC, like the Vintage Market, Fairview Pottery Sale, and Music Collector’s Show, just to name a few! The ARC is also the home of the Acadia Community Association, and many of their incredible community events are hosted at the facility. Be sure to check out our event page to see what events are coming up!
In July, as our trade show season comes to a close, we have kid’s camps that take up their place. We have a couple that are here through the summer, so be sure to check out our summer camp page to learn more and register!
Celebrating 40 Years with Craig Recksiedler
Celebrating 40 years at the Acadia Recreation Complex (ARC), Craig Recksiedler has seen more ice than most northerners. He has been an ice maker his whole life and has seen a lot of change during his time at the ARC.
Coming from a small town in southern Manitoba, Craig grew up on the family farm and was always seen with a curling broom, hockey stick or guitar in his hands. During the long, cold winter months, he volunteered as an icemaker at the outdoor skating rink. Along with the rink, they had two curling sheets.
Craig moved to Calgary in the early 80’s and, following everything he already knew, he walked straight into the ARC in 1984 and was amazed at this new modern facility that housed multipurpose rooms, a hall, courts, hockey rink and 10 sheets of curling ice! He approached the guy in charge, who immediately said they weren’t hiring. However, persistent Craig said he “would work for free.” Those were the magical words and he was ‘hired’ on the spot. This position consisted of every dirty job in the building, but after a few weeks of hard labour, he was officially hired, and 40 years later here he is, still making ice! No one knows the ice or the building better than Craig does. He has remained the one constant when everything else around him was changing.
Now with his level 3 Ice Technician ticket in hand, he has had the opportunity to make ice at every major event to hit Calgary. He has made ice for the Curling Trials for the Olympics in 1988, and many Canadian Women’s and Canadian Men’s Championships Briars, as well as Scottie’s Championships. He is so proud of all the big events, along with everything at the ARC, like leading and training great teams of upcoming ice makers who have followed in his footsteps. Craig has overseen many renos inside and outside of the ARC, including the refrigerated floors in the ice arena and curling rink, and inserts in the curling rocks.
Craig has made so many friends over the years from customers, staff and Board members. Every day is a new day and he continues to love the challenge of making the perfect sheet of curling ice!
For fun, Craig’s passion is music and he plays in a band called the Wandering V’s, where he acts as singer songwriter for the group. They play all around Calgary and he would love for you to come and listen sometime!
Craig has been an integral part of the Acadia Recreation complex team for 40 years and he continues to show up regularly to make ice. One has to wonder how many times he has walked around the globe with the number of steps he has made over the 40 years of walking up and down each sheet, but as he coasts into retirement (not yet, we are told) he just wants to enjoy an ice cold beer!
Everyone from the Acadia Community Association Board and the Acadia Recreation Complex wish Craig a huge congratulations on this remarkable achievement!
